How I got to these numbers

Step 1 — Strip away irrelevant population

The original chart compares AI users to all 8.1B humans. But ~25% are children under 15 (~2B) and ~10% are 65+ (~0.8B). Another ~2.6B people have no internet access at all. That leaves roughly 3–4B working-age, internet-connected adults.

Step 2 — Define "knowledge workers"

Estimates of global knowledge workers range from 800M to 1.2B — professionals in roles where AI tools are directly applicable (office workers, developers, designers, marketers, analysts, consultants, finance, legal, etc.). Microsoft/Edelman surveyed 31,000 knowledge workers across 31 markets; PwC surveyed 50,000 across 48 economies.

Step 3 — AI usage among knowledge workers

~50% using AI at work

Microsoft's 2024 Work Trend Index found 75% of knowledge workers have "used AI at work" — but PwC's 2025 survey found only 14% use GenAI daily, with 19% of office workers. The gap: most usage is casual or occasional.

Step 4 — Paying subscribers

~35M paying users across all platforms

ChatGPT has ~800M weekly active users with an estimated 10–20M Plus subscribers and ~5M business/enterprise seats. Claude has ~20M monthly users. Including Gemini Advanced, Copilot Pro, and others, total paying AI subscribers globally likely sit at 30–40M.

Step 5 — AI-native developers (coding scaffolds)

~5–15M

GitHub Copilot reached 20M users by mid-2025, with 1.3M paid subscribers. ~85% of developers now use at least one AI coding tool. Those actively using agentic coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot Agent Mode) as core workflow is a smaller subset, estimated at 5–15M.
